Testing
The examination schedule is linked in the "Quick Links" list to the left. AOC sponsors
exams at various times during the year. For gaining admission to an exam, there
is a deadline to meet. The deadline for our receiving the Oral Exam Application
or Written Exam Application is stated on the Application. Send the appropriate
Exam Application with a certified check or money order for the amount as stated
on the Application to the AOC address below.
To work as an interpreter in Alabama’s courts, please fill out the other forms in
the Links list and email to joy.evans@alacourt.gov
or fax to 334-954-3134 or mail to the address for AOC below. You must fill out and
send in a Background Check Authorization and photocopies of Identification.
Example: Passport OR driver's license AND birth certificate OR social security
card. Not having the background check completed before the exam could delay
your ability to be placed on the Registry of available interpreters, even if you
pass the exams. If you are a sole proprietor and not employed by a company of some
kind, then you’ll need to also fill out the Sole Proprietor E-Verify Affidavit.
If you’re certified in another state or with the federal courts already, Alabama
may consider you eligible for certification without testing. However, you must still
meet certain requirements. Please send that information if you’re interested in
Alabama’s reciprocity requirements.
You should also carefully read Alabama’s Conduct and Ethics of
a Foreign Language Interpreter. Following the instructions in that document
are essential to your continuing service as an interpreter for courts in Alabama.
Thank you for your interest in serving Alabama’s court system.
